oblivious dragonfly

This week I had to wrack my brain to find something in the house that people ask about when they come over.

first problem is that we have very few people actually come over. so, nobody to ask about anything.

so kind of a twist, something we have hanging on the wall, and i think it was my brother-in-law (who’s an artist/art teacher) pointed it out to me:

Copy ink

so excuse the glare/reflection. i wasn’t taking it down off the wall, or out of it’s frame.

this is an india ink drawing of another painting, i don’t know who the original artist is so can’t credit them, but this drawing is a copy of that original and  was done by my sister.

looking at this photo, it’s obvious now, but when you look at it on the wall it’s not (well to me anyway). it was hanging there for years before i was told there was a  dragon fly “hidden” in the drawing. going over to the wall now it’s not nearly as obvious as it is in this image (which is an HDR shot).

zooming in shows there’s quite a bit of detail. but i was oblivious to it.

this one is asked about also. My sister was in Bangor, Maine, and took a photo of Stephen King’s house (apparently everybody does it).

this is a free hand  india ink drawing of that photo (ignore the bad shot, the detail is there.)

King

She also did a pencil drawing  of the “Changes One” Bowie album cover, that you’d be hard pressed to tell from the original.

re-invigorating blogs

i don’t read many non-tech blogs. but somehow  https://julieonwards.wordpress.com guilted me into keeping a regular blog schedule and i started to follow …somehow she also managed to bamboozle https://darcieinygk.wordpress.com (this one also better written than mine ) and so i’m reading it too.

both are outside my comfort zone for reading, but i’m going to make them pay by blogging more than they do 🙂

ventedspleen.ca

as much as i like digitalocean and the blog i hosted there, it was a bit of a pain to maintain the server. that’s not a suprise with any diy site but my days of playing around with various tools are coming to an end. i’m very picky about the tech i play around with now, and i’ve decided that my blogging tools are not going to be one of them.

to that end, i’m moving my ventedspleen.ca domain over to my wordpress page. right now i’m typing this as a draft, but when this blog goes live, it should be available via ventedspleen.ca

it’s nice to be able to use Marsedit again, and probably time for me to upgrade.

an hour later: i upgraded Marsedit to v4. still waiting for my ISP to update their DNS. seems like everyone else on the internet has, but i can’t publish this until it’s updated:

dig ventedspleen.ca

;; ANSWER SECTION:

ventedspleen.ca. 1140 IN A 104.236.24.180

but google knows:

dig @8.8.8.8 ventedspleen.ca

;; ANSWER SECTION:
ventedspleen.ca. 299 IN A 192.0.78.25
ventedspleen.ca. 299 IN A 192.0.78.24

so yeah, not as of two hours ago :/

24 hrs later: and my isp as rejoined the internet <snrk>

WordPress app

back when I created this blog there were no such things as apps, mainly because there were no smart phones at the time.

so I’m trying the app to type this in using a Dell venue 8

I continue to be impressed by the features available on the site and so far the app hasn’t taken away from my renewed enthusiasm.

I’m now starting to think of pointing my domain to this sight instead of the ghost based one it’s pointing to now.

I was reluctant to use a hosting site because if those sites don’t make enough money (or for some other esoteric reason) they disappear. Microsoft Spaces anyone?

WordPress has been around for over ten years so I think I’m OK 🙂

lost blogs

a few years ago i used to rant about the squarespace blogging platform. and then they “upgraded”. you read that right. they fixed things until they were broken and i couldn’t use my blogging tool (MarsEdit). or my phone app. then they charged (i think yearly) after i closed my account. apparently i needed to follow their 37 steps to close the blog. but now i couldn’t…because i didn’t have an account anymore…i complained to them about it. i wasn’t nasty but i told them they shouldn’t make their customers jump through hoops before they jump ship. anyway i know i won’t be charged anymore when my credit card gets updated… i can’t wait to get that email ‘cause i got a really sarcastic reply all ready to go in response 🙂

a few week ago a colleague and i decided to re-invigorate our blogs. and during the process i discovered i had a wordpress blog i created a while back. i also have a blogger one, and a few others. long since abandoned.

her’s is here:  https://julieonwards.wordpress.com/

it’s much better written than mine and i find  i get a case of burning nostalgia when i read it because it brings up similar memories for me.

during the process of getting this one ready again, i found the customization options weren’t too bad. i haven’t settled on a look yet, this one is called “Lovecraft” which appealed to me so i thought i would work with it for a bit. so if you follow via the actual web page. you’ll probably see change if i get inspired 🙂

that photo is mine. taken when i lived in Europe. i think it’s somewhere in France

i may post older blogs as i have a bad tendency to refer to them and i don’t want to link to other pages but i do want to have some context available. i found the including links had a limited lifespan so i’ve stopped including them over the last few years.
